History

Radiation oncology services are an essential treatment component in a multidisciplinary system of care for cancer patients.

In the early 1980's, it became apparent that cancer patients in the northeastern quadrant of Connecticut had comparatively less access to radiation oncology services than those living in other areas of the state. To obtain radiation oncology services, it was often necessary for patients to travel relatively long distances.

Based on the results of a needs assessment, the region's community hospitals (Manchester Memorial, Rockville General, Johnson Memorial), partnered to develop a regional radiation oncology plan. Hartford Hospital was selected to complete the system and deliver technical and professional radiation oncology services. This resulted in a four-hospital, not-for-profit joint venture committed to delivering radiation oncology services to citizens in these under served communities.

The two sites selected to deliver radiation oncology services are in major population centers, accessible to regional highway systems, as well as to other medical services needed for patients.

The northern site is located in the Phoenix Community Cancer Center, a newly constructed building at Johnson Memorial Hospital's ambulatory office park on Rte 190 in Enfield. The southern site is located in the John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center located on the Manchester Memorial campus.

Patients in the community will have access to radiation oncology services in their own community along with access to high technology services at the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital. Community CancerCare offers a level of quality and technology comparable to that associated with teaching hospital based radiation oncology programs.
