LecturesA Memorial That Branches OutThe Avis M. Lloyd Tree of Life, located within the John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center, offers a unique and wonderful way to recognize loved ones. The Tree of Life, which was unveiled in June, is a beautifully sculptured wall mounting with dozens of leaves in brass, silver and copper. Donors may memorialize or honor family members, friends, and organizations through the purchase of one of the 200 engravable leaves. The initial set-up of the giving tree was paid for in part through the Avis M. Lloyd Fund, a fund established by Mrs. Lloyd's children, other family members, and friends. Not only is the purpose of the tree to honor the memory of loved ones, but it is also meant to celebrate the current lives of family and friends by honoring birthdays, anniversaries, marriages, retirements, or other special occasions. A major portion of the donations raised through the sale of leaves will be used to establish a fund to assist cancer patients who are unable to afford anti-nausea medication needed to alleviate the affects of chemotherapy. Mary Wilson, Avis Lloyd's daughter, said, "The family thought the tree was the best way to memorialize a person who spent her whole life giving." Donors wishing to purchase a leaf may select from either a $100 brass, $200 silver, or $300 copper leaf that is personalized with their message. The Tree is on permanent public display within The John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center for patients and visitors to view while visiting the Center. Exercise for Life: An Exercise Program for Cancer PatientsIt is well known that exercise offers many benefits for healthy individuals. However, research findings indicate that exercise is beneficial for cancer patients as well. Under the guidance of a trained registered nurse cancer patients can exercise using their own individualized exercise prescription. For more information and a fee schedule, please call Manchester Memorial Hospital at (860) 646-1222, ext 2166, or Rockville General Hospital at (860) 872-5171. The American Cancer Society's I Can Cope educational classes for cancer patients, their families, and care givers are held several times throughout the year on different topics. There is also a program entitled Look Good, Feel Better, which helps women cope with cancer and their changing appearance. Please call (860) 643-2168 for more information. To Support early detection, through its Medical Imaging departments Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) has available the latest mammography and follow-up screening options. We are able to provide FREE mammography and cervical screening services to eligible women. These services are made possible with the support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Connecticut Department of Public Health's Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, and the Manchester Chapter of UNICO National, which sponsors the Manchester Women's Breast Cancer Screening Program. Ms. Carr will share her story of courage, strength, and humor. All attendees will receive a free copy of her most recent book, Crazy, Sexy Cancer Survivor: More Rebellion and Fire for Your Healing Journey. Following the presentation, there will be a book-signing at The John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center. Refreshments will be provided. Pre-registration is required for this free event. Phoenix Community Cancer CenterFree MammographyJohnson Memorial Hospital, a recipient of the Komen Connecticut Race for the Cure grant, is pleased to offer free mammograms and clinical breast exams to women who are financially eligible. Women who have no insurance or who have a high deductible are encouraged to apply for these free services conducted at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs or the Johnson Surgery Center in Enfield.
